Program Description:

Find the soul of England by living in the heart of London.

"Studying on the Hollins Abroad London program changed my life--my values, my way of thinking, my perspective, my priorities. It also gave me a great feeling of success and belief in myself. I feel like I can do anything now."

Angela Broadus, Hollins Abroad London

Big Ben & Parliament

For students enrolled in Hollins Abroad London, the British capital is your classroom. With frequent field trips in every class, you'll get to know the city inside and out. You'll explore history in the British Museum, study masterpieces of modern European art in the Tate Gallery, and view Shakespeare's tragedies at the Globe. Qualified students may also enroll in a course at London South Bank University or undertake a career-focused internship.

With classroom and study space in Connaught Hall, in the center of the University of London district, Hollins Abroad London's location couldn't be better. Several University of London colleges, the Student Union, the Senate House Library, and the British Museum are just a short walk away. The upper floors of Connaught Hall house several social spaces as well as a student pub. Our full-time resident director, a longtime Londoner, provides expert advice and assistance, and also organizes group travel within the United Kingdom and to mainland Europe.

Academics

Dancer

Hollins Abroad-London Courses are taught by expert British faculty and include numerous field trips to museums, plays, concerts, and sites of historical and political interest. Classes are generally small and seminar-style. Assignments and grading are similar to those at Hollins, but the perspective and expectations of faculty will be somewhat different, due to their British academic training. Courses are included in the Hollins academic catalog and can be applied to majors, minors, and general education requirements without special approval. Hollins Abroad courses are taken with fellow program participants, including both Hollins students and students from other American colleges and universities.

Qualified Hollins Abroad London students may substitute one Hollins Abroad course for a course in their major at London South Bank University or Queen Mary University of London. LSBU and QMUL offer courses in a wide range of academic disciplines. Most LSBU and QMUL courses are primarily lecture-format, with class participation and discussion playing a lesser role. There are generally few assignments and an expectation that you will do a considerable amount of independent reading and study. Your grade may be determined by one or two major assignments/examinations. LSBU and QMUL courses are taken with British and international students and these courses are subject to the registrar's course approval process.

Hollins Abroad London students who are 2nd-semester sophomores and up may elect to undertake an internship for credit in any one of a wide variety of settings, including Parliament, business, law, media, the arts, education, sports, and many other fields. London internships are arranged based on the student's major and area of interest. A separate application is required for the internship program. Interns must work approximately 20 hours per week, scheduled around your Hollins Abroad classes. Grades are based on the required internship journal and supervisors' evaluations. Internships are worth six credits and take the place of two of your four courses.

There are also options for independent study for dance students at the renowned London dance studio The Place.

***Please note that Hollins Abroad London students may elect only one "non-Hollins experience." For example, a student may do an internship or a course at LSBU/QMUL, but not both.

Other Program Features

Housing and Meals

Students can choose to live with British hosts or in a student residence hall. Most students choose to live with British hosts, which gives the students the opportunity to experience British culture and British perspectives on political and social issues. Students who live with British hosts have their own house keys and are treated as independent adults. Homestays are in the residential areas of northern London with convenient connections on public transportation to Connaught Hall. A bus and tube pass is provided for all students. Both double and single rooms are available. The housing coordinator matches students with hosts based on information provided by students in the housing questionnaire of the online application. All hosts are carefully screened by the program director and most of them have been with Hollins Abroad for many years, receiving excellent student evaluations.

A second option is a student residence hall where students share facilities with British and international university students, which is a nice way to meet students outside the program. Each flat has its own bathroom facilities, but the kitchen and common areas are shared.

Students staying with British hosts have all breakfasts and three dinners per week with their hosts and receive a stipend from Hollins to help cover the costs of all other meals. Students staying in a residence hall receive a stipend from Hollins for lunches.
