Program Information:
Spend a semester studying AND interning in Perugia, the heart of Italy.  On Study Internship in Perugia, you will be studying at an institute designed to offer U.S. university students the opportunity to become immersed in the Italian culture while learning both in and outside the classroom.  You’ll also enjoy a custom-chosen internship that will complement your academic studies, but provide exceptional professional development and improve your functional and workplace Italian.

Here are some things to expect while on this unique program:
  • Life in a college town:  You will live among a number of other university students, from both Italy and other countries around the world.  Perugia is a medium-sized college town with approximately 150,000 people and some of the country’s finest restaurants, cafes, and nightlife, so you can expect great opportunities to meet locals.
     
  • Custom-designed internships: Have you been wondering what it is like to work with food or at a museum?  What about business, computer science, or sustainability? Use your time abroad to try something new, or take the opportunity to expand upon skills you already know!
     
  • Living in one of Italy’s art and cultural centers: Perugia has longstanding tradition of art and artists.  You can check out a number of masterpieces at the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, visit the beautiful churches and buildings within the city, or explore the Etruscan Arch or any of the other antiquities in Perugia.
  • Student activities and excursions - In addition to the numerous Umbra events, activities, and academic field trips, you can participate in any of CISabroad's social dinners, excursions, and cultural activities. Be sure to also check out Perugia's sporting events, and explore the city's historical sites.
     
Location:
Often called “the big university town in a small Italian city,” Perugia is the home of the Umbra Institute and is located about halfway between Rome and Florence in the Umbria region. The city is historic, and has winding cobblestone streets, medieval churches, Etruscan walls, and Baroque and Renaissance architecture, which, when combined, gives Perugia its Old World feel. Perugia’s main street Corso Vannucci is a pedestrian street that is constantly pulsing with the energy from the jazz cafes, restaurants, pubs, and cultural exhibits that line the walkway.  The city is the perfect place for you to experience an authentic Italian life, which makes it a perfect location for interning abroad in Italy.


Academics:
The Study Internship in Perugia program is housed at the Umbra Institute through the General Studies program, which offers courses in a wide variety of subjects, including Archaeology, Art History and Studio Art, Classical Studies, Creative Writing, Economics, Education, European Studies, Film and Media, Food Studies, History, International Business and Marketing, Italian Language and Literature,  Political Science, Psychology, Religion and Philosophy, Sociology, Sustainability, Women's Studies, and more. The General Studies program has two components: Italian language and culture courses and an array of elective courses taught in English. All students are required to take Italian language for four to six credits. Within the General Studies program, students may also choose to enroll in Food Studies, Honors, or Independent Research courses.

To participate in an academic internship, students must enroll in the three-credit INIT 350: Academic Internship and Seminar as one of their elective courses. The Umbra Institute offers internship placements in local schools, museums, and non-profit organizations and may vary each semester. This elective course has two main components: one experiential and one reflective. The experiential component provides students with direct experience in an international work setting. The reflective component is a seminar through which students gain academic knowledge that applies directly to their internship experience. These interactive seminars are guided by field-experienced professors at the Umbra Institute. Students will be at their internship site for approximately four hours per week and attend a one-and-a-half hour seminar weekly.


Placement and Credits:

Spend a semester studying AND interning in Perugia, the heart of Italy. CISabroad is now offering credit bearing internships for students in the General Studies program at the Umbra Institute. A credit bearing internship will be an "Academic Internship" course that you may choose as one of your electives. As part of this course, you will work with a company or organization in the Umbria area and will complete relevant coursework. Placements can be found in: education, sociology, anthropology, economics, museum studies, history, journalism, communications, food studies, sustainability, business, and more.

For the internship portion of this program, you will be asked to provide the following (which will be asked of you after you apply):
