Marine Preservation in Italy

Conservation of Marine Biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea at the Arcadia Sicily Center

syracuseThe Mediterranean sea is an area of recognized ecological importance especially for the unique biodiversity of its waters, the high number of endemic species and the presence of key areas for the reproduction of pelagic species. Although it covers only 0.7% of the worldwide marine surface area, the Mediterranean holds 9% of its biodiversity that, in recent decades, has seen an increase of anthropogenic pressure by the fishing industry, tourism, pollution and coastal development.

Italy, in the Mediterranean area, has the highest number of marine reserves and it was one of the first countries in the world to establish 27 marine reserves and two submerged parks. Among the various systems for the conservation of this beautiful sea, the establishment of marine-protected areas has proved to be the most effective system to cope with the changes of the marine ecosystems.

The College of Global Studies offers students an intense program in marine biology and conservation of marine ecosystem in collaboration with The Marine Protected Area of Plemmirio, a few kilometers south of Siracusa (Sicily) and the marine-protected area of Marettimo one of most beautiful Aegadian islands of west coast of Sicily. Marettimo, also known as "the great mountain," was the ancient Hierã, "Sacred Island" and also Ulysses' Ithaca. Marettimo is wonderfully unspoiled both in terms of its marine life and its rugged mountainous hinterland. Dramatic limestone cliffs plummet towards the cobalt-blue sea, endless panoramas abound, and mountain paths offer wonderful walking and exploring. It is an idea place to study the conservation of Marine Biodiversity.
