Program Description:
This intense session trains you in the full design process of a piece of furniture, normally a chair. Training students in the process of furniture-making through design and building of a full-scale ‘sitting support’. Includes conceptual development, continued refinement of the concept, production of working drawings, building of a wood, laminate veneer, or steel prototype in scale 1:1, and training communication through the exhibition of their work.

The lecture course and study tour expose you to the history of manufacturing in post-industrial Scandinavia. You will examine history, theory, key works, and current expressions of Scandinavian furniture design. 

Prerequisite
Documented background in fine arts, or studio art, or completion of a course in drawing.

Portfolio Requirement
Students should bring examples of their work in a portfolio to be submitted to their studio instructors. This will allow the professors to become acquainted with the design skills of each student.

The portfolio should contain:
• A one-page resume (short and precise) listing all studios, courses, assignments, and other relevant material, beginning with the most recent information.  Clearly state current year/position in school. Briefly state expectations of study at DIS.
• Approximately 3 pages of project illustrations from one or several projects done in studio (or independently if relevant), accompanied by a short description.
The portfolio must be submitted as a digital PDF or hard copy. The pages should be formatted to A4 size (210mmx297mm) or US-Letter size (8.5"x11")
