About Mumbai

Mumbai is a dynamic city offering study abroad students a broad canvas of cultural, intellectual, and social experiences. Anyone visiting Mumbai for the first time is immediately struck by the contradictions of Mumbai’s prosperity (Antilla, a $43 billion home residing 6 people only) and poverty (Dharavi – world’s largest slum) and the harmonious co-existence of the two. Because of its enterprising nature, Mumbai attracts people from various race, class, religion across India and the world, making it the most populous and diverse city. It is also known as the city of dreams. Mumbai is the economic and entertainment capital of India and combines the traditional as well as the modern, ensuring that students gain insight into the linguistic, historical, and cultural diversity of modern India.

Where You’ll Study

The Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research is recognized as a leader in business education due to its focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, and applied learning, and has recently been ranked #16 nationally in the Economic Times of India Forbes India Ranked  Welingkar 8th in International Linkages and 10th amongst Top Private B-Schools in India. Welingkar holds All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), SAQS (South Asian Quality Assurance System) accreditations to name a few and AACSB & EQUIS are in progress.

It is located near both the Matunga and Dadar railway stations in Mumbai. Matunga has long been a hub of education, dating back to1887. The famous Shivaji Park, the largest green space in Mumbai and home to some of the best cricket players in the world, is located in Dadar. The public areas around the institution are thriving with students, local eateries, and cafes. The Mumbai campus consists of one large multi-story building which faces a cricket field where students are often seen sitting and chatting under the shade of the massive trees the line the boulevard – a rarity in Mumbai. Housing & Meals

Study abroad students are placed in student hostels near the Welingkar facility. Male students live in the “Boys Hostel” which is three bus stops away from the Welingkar campus and takes about 15 minutes to reach by public bus, less by taxi or rickshaw. Female students live in the “Girls Hostel” which is a 5-minute walk from the campus.

The hostels have 24-hour security and an 11:30 p.m. curfew for all students. Students may be able to come in after curfew by alerting the guard on duty about their plans, but are expected to honor the rules in place in-line with other Indian students in the dormitory. However, it should be noted that female students can expect  their hostel rules to be more strictly enforced  in-line with other cultural norms related to gender and Indian society. The on-site orientation period will cover these and other related issues important to students’ assimilation into typical Indian university life.

Each floor has a bathroom that includes western toilets, showers, and sinks. There is a small cooking space on each floor.

Breakfast and lunch are not included in the study abroad program, but can easily be found in the Matunga area or in the on-campus student canteen. A lot of hotels & restaurants give free home delivery on placing an order on phone. To ensure good nutrition and general health among students, dinner is provided by the famous “dabbawala delivery service” associated with modern life in Mumbai and cultural artifact from Mumbai’s colonial past. The meals are served in convenient, tray packed, disposable containers which are delivered to the hostels where students may enjoy them at their leisure. Students can choose between vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. These meals are served from Monday to Saturday.

Academic Program

CIEE started its new India study abroad program focusing on International Business & Culture (IBC) in Fall 2010. Students are provided the exclusive opportunity to study various aspects of management, entrepreneurship, and business design in a direct enrollment environment with local Indian MBA-level students and a small number of other exchange students from the EU at Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research.

Most recently, CIEE and Welingkar have co-developed two elective courses to better meet the needs of the CIEE and international graduate students enrolled there. The Contemporary India course provides business students a holistic picture of India, its growth & development over the last 5 decades. The course  focuses on various topics about modern India like religion and society, emerging markets, pre and post-independence economic changes, to name a few. The Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice has been developed to give students a hands-on idea of how entrepreneurs influence business in India. For example the legal, political issues faced, consumer behavior study, consumption patterns and trends, Glocalisation (adapting global products and services as per local requirements). At the end of the course students are equipped with the knowledge of setting up a business to launch a product/service in India.

The above two courses are highly recommended by CIEE as it is designed to help American students get a complete understanding of the country and the business scenario in India.
CIEE study abroad students also enroll in one 13-week academic term, which include required corporate and cultural site visits during the course, which serve to supplement learning following the academic term plus a week of cultural site visits to Delhi and Agra at the end of the term.

The Hindi I language course meets twice each week for two hour session. Students in the Hindi I course are required to take an additional 20 hours of supplemental one-on-one language practice outside of the classroom which are held in real situation (like market place, taxi drive) to further enhance their understanding and use of Hindi in the context of Mumbai.

There is an ongoing orientation of Mumbai including visit to the markets, caves, festival sites, museums & places of historical and cultural importance. The students get a first-hand experience of local trade, where they learn how to bargain, Guest lectures by industry professionals, and visits to manufacturing units and companies give the students insights and perspective into the practical, real-life business scenario.

After participating in coursework at Welingkar, students demonstrate deeper literacy about trends in the global marketplace and Indian markets; multi-cultural leadership skills as a result of taking part in various group projects with Indian peers; considerable familiarity and mastery of the business concepts and management techniques acquired in the classroom through successful exams, group project work, and final papers; and expertise on Mumbai’s role in the global marketplace and national economy. In addition, they are able to read and write Hindi, communicate with the locals in the local language and understand the importance of certain religious and cultural nuances. This allows the students to develop new vocabulary and focus on topics that are of direct personal interest to their future career in global management or international business.

Academic Culture

The learning pedagogy at Welingkar Institute includes classroom lectures, discussions, case studies, interactive sessions, workshops, group projects, presentations, and industry assignments. Companies from various industries collaborate with Welingkar on course-based industry assignments and roundtables throughout each term.

They involve a large number of working, industry professionals to teach on academic programs on daily basis. This gives students the opportunity to work on real life case studies and often assist on Live Projects. However, the classes often get re-scheduled due to changes in instructor’s availability. During certain weeks, make-up classes may be held on Saturdays or Sundays which is in-line with the expectations of local India students in the classes.

Welingkar also works with international companies across various industries for summer internships and hiring, as well as with a growing number of entrepreneurial start-ups and socially-minded businesses located in India.

The pedagogy at Welingkar is considered to be amongst one of the most innovative and student-centered business school curriculums in India today. The academic and intellectual environment is very demanding and requires students to be fully engaged in their courses and group project work that is an integral component of most courses.

The Hindi language courses are taught in both a task-based and communicative manner to ensure that students make the most of their language coursework while on the program.

Nature of Classes

Welingkar courses range in size from 40 to 60 students. The majority of students in the classes are Indian and in the first or second year of their MBA program. Study abroad students are strongly encouraged to enroll in the new contemporary India and entrepreneurship course, designed for foreign students, and Hindi, to assist them with their understanding and assimilation into Indian student culture. The students can therefore choose from two to five direct enrollment classes with Welingkar students.

Grading System

In all Welingkar courses, students are graded on the basis of class participation, group project work, and presentations, and, to a large extent, the final exam. In some courses, assessment is based on a theoretical exam and a practical aspect of the class, specifically a group or individual project. Mid-terms are not given. Grades are given on a 100-point scale and converted to the U.S. grading scale.

Students must check with their professors to find out exam and other due dates. Under no circumstances will CIEE alter the deadline for a student who has made travel plans on the same day an exam is scheduled or an assignment is due.
